Adoption - Where to start?
Welcome to a club that gains new members in the hundreds of thousands worldwide every year: The Adoptive Parents Club! Reasons for adopting vary as much as the families who find themselves attracted to it. Whether it be to fulfill a lifelong wish to adopt, or as a Plan B when full term pregnancy hasn’t been possible, or uniting step-parents and children – whatever your reason, the result is a family!Adoption Options
Have you thought about what kind of child you want to adopt? What age should they be? What race should they be? This can be a starting point for searching for the appropriate professional to help you through your adoption.
- The first option that comes to most people’s minds is the Agency Adoption. In this option, you will work with an agency specializing in adoption, whether it is a public agency or a private one.
- Another option is the Independent Adoption. In this scenario, you would work with an attorney specializing in adoption cases.
- And the final option is Adoption Facilitators. These are professionals who seek out adoption opportunities for you, and will often have a faster result time than traditional agencies, at a cost. State laws differ as to their legality.
Adoption Law
It’s always a good idea to check out the adoption laws in your state, and the state where your child will be coming from, or U.S. law and the laws in the country you’ll be adopting from. There are many differences, and it would be more than heartbreaking to get so close, and no further because of the law.
Financial Concerns
Another issue you’ll have to face is cost. Many parents complain of the cost of living and raising a child these days. What with school tuitions, trendy clothes and the latest games and hobbies, besides all the real necessities of life, kids can cost you a pretty penny! Well, as an adoptive parent, the costs can be quite a bit higher! Prices range from zero for adoptions out of the U.S. foster care system, all the way up to as much as $30,000 for international adoptions. Always make sure you clarify what fees you will be paying, and what they are for to avoid confusion.
With these choices to start with, you’ve got plenty to chew on for now! Adoption takes patience, just as raising children does, so consider it as practice for the future! Good luck!
