Puzzles are endlessly fascinating for your child!

Description:
Every time your child puts a puzzle together, his or her problem-solving abilities get better. Your little one is also building the skills needed to read and write, as well as learning that the sum of parts can make a whole; a concept that will help him or her in math later on. Start with simple puzzles. When her or she masters one level, graduate to more complex puzzles. Remember to give positive reinforcement.

Instead of saying, "No, not that piece," say, "Let's try again and see if the piece fits here." When your child fits the piece, say, "Great job! You did it!"

Step by Step:

  1. Pick a puzzle that is age-appropriate and features familiar objects or people.
  2. Start by removing one piece from a completely assembled puzzle and allowing your child to replace it.
  3. Take out two or more pieces, and see if your child is able to place them back in the appropriate places. Continue to increase the number of pieces you remove at each step.
  4. Talk about the theme of the puzzle and extend the experience by asking questions.
  5. When your child has mastered the puzzle, move on to a new one.
