Drums are a great way to explore sound, rhythm, and patterns.
Drums are easy to make and fun to play. They come in all shapes and sizes and make a variety of sounds. Some are used for music, and others are used as a means of communicating over great distances.

This simple coffee can version provides a springboard for a lesson in sound, rhythm, and patterns.

Step by Step:

  1. Cover empty coffee cans (with plastic lids) with felt. Decorate with sequins, fabric scraps, glitter, etc. Let dry.
  2. Experiment with the different sounds that can be made on the drum. For example, vary the sounds by hitting the drums with spoons, dowels, open hands, and fingertips. Have your child experiment by striking the drum in the center or near the edge.
  3. Try different drum beat patterns. Create a pattern, and ask children to follow it.
Materials:
  • Coffee cans
