Mealtime Manners - Nov 19th, 2007
Even though it's messy, let your baby feed herself .
As babies grow older they want to feel "grown-up" at the table. With your help, they'll soon become more competent at holding utensils and sipping from a cup.

Your child must be able to focus in order to master all the new skills, so keep interruptions like wiping her mouth every five seconds to a minimum. Remember that no matter how careful you are, there will be plenty of spills to clean up, so keep a few wet paper towels or a sponge close at hand. And above all, be patient.
Delight as your baby masters each step, and keep a camera handy because the process also makes for great photo opportunities.
- Place baby in a seated position (in a high chair if possible).
- Show your baby how to put the spoon into the food and then to her mouth. Talk them through the activity as you go.
- Demonstrate how to use a cup by guiding your baby to drink from a cup with your help.
- Repeat these activities over and over until your baby can use the cup and spoon properly.
