As an added bonus, making these creepy crawlies helps children with a variety of math skills, from measuring ingredients to counting legs, as well as calls on their creative skills to roll and mold the dough into spiders, bats, snakes, and other Halloween critters.
Step by Step:
- Put the yeast in a bowl with the water (it should be lukewarm) and whisk with sugar or honey. Explain to your child that sugar helps yeast grow, causing it to smell. Let the yeast sit for 5-10 minutes. When tiny bubbles appear and the mixture starts to expand, you're ready to move on.
- Mix in the salt and flour. Stir everything together. Start with a spoon and finish with your hands as the dough becomes stiff. It's ready when it's a little crumbly.
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured board and knead it until it is smooth and elastic (up to 10 minutes). - Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size (1-2 hours).
- Punch the dough down and knead it again to remove any air bubbles.
- Divide the dough into ten equal sections.
- For each pretzel, roll a section into a body. To make the legs, break small pieces off and use your hands to roll to about 2 inches in length.
- Attach the legs to the body, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for about 30 minutes.
- Place creepy crawlies on baking sheet, brush on egg wash, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake in an oven preheated to 400 for 12-15 minutes or until
lightly brown. While still warm, press in decorations for eyes.
