Head to the great outdoors for a "rocking" geology expedition.

Description:
When you go on a walk with your youngster, whether around the neighborhood or at the park, turn it into a geology expedition. Look around for some rocks. You will be able to find some. Look for the most interesting and colorful ones and put them in a bag to bring home.

Bring them home and wash them off. Put them in a pile on a newspaper and sort them. Admire each one, talk to your child about each rock, how they have been around for years and years, and that they are older than Grandma and Grandpa! Get an empty and clean mayonnaise or spaghetti sauce jar and put the rocks into it starting with the largest and heaviest and ending with the smallest.

Also, it's great fun taking a trip to your local nature store or natural history museum to see some of their beautifully colored gemstones. Your child will truly enjoy the textures of these natural masterpieces!

Step by Step:

  • Take a walk where you can find rocks.
  • Collect an assortment, bring them home, wash them off and sort them.
  • Look at all the stones and talk about them.
  • Save them in a large glass jar.
  • Alternatively, visit a nature store or museum and admire their collections.

    Materials:
    Sturdy bag
    Clean glass jar
